About the Society

Gunboat MELIK, 1898The aim of the Melik Society is to advance public awareness of Anglo-Sudanese history in the period 1883-1899 and subsequently, through the restoration and preservation of the river gunboat Melik and the paddle steamer Bordein.

The immediate objectives are:

  • To facilitate the preservation and restoration of the remaining gunboats MELIK and BORDEIN so that they can be exhibited, maintained and demonstrated to the general public.
  • To generate awareness of the Sudan campaigns and to stimulate public interest in Anglo Sudanese history.
  • To research and publish information about the engineering aspects of the campaigns and conservation of artefacts.
  • To establish a database of Sudanese military history in the U.K.
  • To encourage goodwill and co-operation between the British and Sudanese organisations involved.
