The aim of the Melik Society is to advance public awareness of Anglo-Sudanese
history in the period 1883-1899 and subsequently, through the restoration
and preservation of the river gunboat Melik and the paddle steamer
Bordein.
The immediate objectives are:
- To facilitate the preservation and restoration of the remaining
gunboats and so that they can be exhibited, maintained
and demonstrated to the general public.
- To generate awareness
of the Sudan campaigns and to stimulate public interest in Anglo
Sudanese history.
- To research and publish information about the
engineering aspects of the campaigns and conservation of artefacts.
- To establish a database of Sudanese military history in the U.K.
- To encourage goodwill and co-operation between the British and
Sudanese organisations involved.
